FEBS Press is seeking to appoint an Editor-in-Chief for the open access journal FEBS Open Bio. Launched in December 2011, FEBS Open Bio is one of four journals owned
by the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS). The journal’s rigorous peer review process focusses on the technical and ethical quality of papers, rather
than objective judgements of significance. This is a new appointment; the current Executive Editor duties will be divided between the Editor-in-Chief and a full-time
Editorial Manager.

Duties

• Act as an ambassador for the journal to the scientific community The Editor-inChief (EIC) will actively promote the journal, through interactions with the scientific
  community, through editorials in the journal, and by representing the journal at public meetings. The EIC will work with the journal staff and the journal’s publishing
  partner to develop marketing strategies.
• Set the journal strategy The EIC, with the Editorial Board, will determine the nature and scope of the journal, propose new features and article types, and improvements
  to journal procedures to attract new submissions. The EIC will work with the journal staff and the journal’s publishing partner to set objectives and strategies for the
  journal. The EIC will present major proposed changes to the FEBS Publications Committee for discussion and approval.
• Lead the editor selection process The EIC will work with the journal staff to identify candidates for the Editorial Board, and to propose new members to the Publications
  Committee for their approval.
• Take ethics decisions The EIC will uphold the ethics policies of FEBS Press and work with journal staff and editorial board members to resolve any ethical issues that
  arise when handling manuscripts for publication in the journal. Ethical matters may involve, but are not limited to, data integrity, plagiarism, authorship disputes or
  conflicts of interest.
• Review and contribute to periodic monitoring reports The EIC will review monthly and annual reports on journal performance prepared by the journal staff and
  present this information to the annual meeting of the Publications Committee.
• Conduct and attend meetings The EIC will chair meetings of the Editorial Board at which the performance of the journal will be reviewed, and ideas gathered for
  improvements to the journal. The EIC will also be required to attend the annual meeting of the Publications Committee and the FEBS Congress.

• A demonstrated commitment to participation in academic peer review.
• The ability to work diplomatically with authors, reviewers and editors.
• The energy and dedication to find time to meet journal deadlines on a regular (nearly daily) basis for the next 5 years.

Dear Colleague,

We are delighted to invite the members of your scientific Society to the second edition of the “FEBS Advanced Lecture Course on Oncometabolism: From Conceptual Knowledge to Clinical Applications”, which will be held in Luso, Portugal, on 1-6 September, 2019. As such, we would appreciate if you could announce this course through your Society´s mailing list.

Following the success of its first edition, described by several participants as “the best course ever!!”,  the “2nd FEBS Advanced Lecture Course on Oncometabolism: From Conceptual Knowledge to Clinical Applications” will cover a wide range of topics, from basic knowledge to clinical applications. Although the focus of the course is on oncometabolism, there will also be lectures on other areas of cancer research, as well as lectures on metabolic regulation, metabolism imaging and metabolomics. In addition, there will be tutorials on fluorescence microscopy, statistics and modelling. By combining tutorials with lectures on the latest developments in the field, it will benefit both young and experienced scientists.

This 2nd edition maintains all features that made the 1st edition so acclaimed, such as outstanding speakers, a generous number of meeting bursaries for abstract-submitting early-career scientists, a small size (limited to 100 participants), a participant versus speaker rate of 5:1, and extensive opportunities for networking with other participants, invited speakers, and sponsors (namely, during leisurely meals and the two trips included in the social programme). Importantly, the programme of this 2nd edition provides participants with even more opportunities for presenting and discussing their own work: all poster sessions will be preceded by flash poster presentations, and some participants will be invited to give short talks. Among other novel features are a “Speed Dating with the Experts” session, which will be an excellent opportunity to ask questions and establish new professional relationships, and the possibility to co-chair a session with an invited speaker. It will be held in the thermal town of Luso, Portugal, on the hillside of the Buçaco mountain range.
